Maybe it’s some form of eternal optimism, but the idea of love at first sight is one of the best kinds of romantic optimism. It hints at fairy tales and roses amidst candlelit excursions, of pure happiness showing through the murky stress of everyday life. Even through the stoic changes that society has endured, many people still believe in the flash of lightning that creates love in a matter of moments.
Christian Mingle, one of the largest and fastest-growing Christian dating sites, recently compiled a survey of members, asking them what they think about love. “Compared to 53 percent of females, 58 percent of male participants said that they believe in love at first sight,” according to The Christian Post.
The phenomenon generally seems to be based on immediate attraction, yet one is always hearing how relationships that begin with a single glance turn into lasting, strong partnerships for life.
Even though about half of everyone believes in love at first sight, the other half is still skeptical. The Christian Post continues: “The online survey additionally revealed that 46 percent of Christian singles still held onto the notion that there was one right person in the world for them compared to the 34 percent of people who disagreed.”
Perhaps the same people who believe in love at first sight are the ones who say God has only one perfect person waiting for them–either way, most experts think that love has to be based on some kind of friendship before it can survive longer than a month of heady butterflies.
Using Christian dating sites to find that zing at first sight can be a difficult task. With so many options, sometimes it’s easy to miss those diamonds in the rough. Many people don’t even consider dates that could actually be The One.
“Today we are looking for someone who accepts us as we are and fulfills our desires, and this creates an unrealistic set of expectations that frustrates both the searches and the searched for,” says Pastor Timothy Keller in Relevant Magazine. This results in constant searching and reaching for someone that should be better than the person we just had dinner with, at least according to our own hopes.
In reality, love at first site and create a temporary connection, but the relationships that last are the ones that have meaningful, deep connections. Keller himself says that he doesn’t believe any two people are instantly compatible, but that God is the only thing that can bring and keep people together.
