Free Christian Dating Sites :: Are They Legit?

Are there any free Christian dating sites? Some might call you “cheap,” but you prefer the term “frugal.” Po-tay-to, po-tot-o. Either way, you’re doing some research on Christian dating for free, so at least people can call you resourceful, right?

Free Christian Dating Sites

First, a word of caution: If you have no experience in the world of online dating, don’t dip your toes in the water of the free Christian dating sites and expect to get a good gauge of how things work.

We’re glad you’re putting yourself out there and trying to meet new people, but when it comes to dating online, you should know that, like all good things in life, you really do get exactly what you (are willing to) pay for. People who won’t ante up when online dating are often found to be less serious about the process than those who are. That being said, sometimes you just can’t afford it, so you go with what you have.

Ultimately, it’s your business, and if you want to venture out into the waters of free Christian dating, we’re here to help you make an informed decision and hopefully avoid a few sharks.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY…MONEY!

Well, they’re all free. So, let’s move on to the next category…

Not so fast. Two of the sites, Real Christian Singles and Christian Dating for Free, are indeed free. No strings attached. You can pay a small fee ($4.95) on Real Christian Singles and avoid the advertisements or you can ignore them and keep that ever-appealing, four-letter word: free.

Singles of Faith is free, also—to a certain extent. Their approach is a bit more unique than the rest of the dating sites we’ve seen. (Note: “Unique” does not always translate to “good.” Sometimes, as is the case here, it can mean just plain ol’ “complicated.”) Basically, the way Singles of Faith works is that you get a free search for regional profiles. For instance, if you live in Seattle, you can search for profiles in the “Northwest,” but unless you’re a paying member, you can’t search for profiles within your specific vicinity (e.g. 20/30/40/50 miles of your Seattle zip code of 98115).

But then, it gets even more complicated. If you do decided to go all in and pay some money for a subscription, the price can range from around $20 all the way to over $300. The reason? Well, you see, the more people in your geographical vicinity, the more money Singles of Faith wants you to pay. The most expensive price tag covers a lifetime membership for those of us who think that we’re going to spend more than just a few months or so on the site. (FYI: There are cheaper lifetime memberships on other online dating websites if you decide to go this route. Check our post Best Christian Dating Sites for more info on those.)

It’s important to remember that you can still use Singles of Faith for free, but if you’re like us and you don’t want to reward them for having such a ridiculous system in place, go with Real Christian Singles or Christian Dating for Free.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE?

Free Christian Dating SitesAll three of the websites we reviewed include profiles from thousands of subscribers, but like we mentioned on our Best Christian Dating Sites post, it can be difficult to pin down exact numbers from these sites. Real Christian Singles, with over 50,000 visitors, appears to have the largest amount of traffic of the three. That is important to consider if you do not live in a large metro area and a lack of singles in your immediate population is a hindrance already.

In regards to the paid memberships for Singles of Faith, once you create an account and enter your zip code, the site will tell you how many profiles they have within your area, and that can help you make the decision on whether or not it is cost-effective to pay for their services or just use the free version.

Because of the larger amount of traffic, we recommend Real Christian Singles.

HOW TECHNOLOGICALLY SAVVY DO I NEED TO BE?

For starters, don’t get in a hurry to get going on Real Christian Singles. There’s a waiting period for profile approval. And we’re not talking a 24-hour waiting period, we’re talking days (less than a week). In fact, we had almost forgotten we had a profile with them we waited so long.

If technology is not one of your strengths, then you might find these sites slightly overwhelming, if for no other reason than the plethora of advertisements. Those advertisements are the price you pay for not handing over money for admission to the carnival.

The sites also offer a wide variety of ways to communicate with matches besides the basic messaging system. You can post prayer requests, chat with people—you can even play video games with them in the arcade. (Not to be confused with an actual date, of course. We couldn’t make this stuff up if we wanted to.)

When it comes to recommendations for ease of use, we didn’t find one to be a clear leader over the others. They’re all somewhat cluttered and users can find all of the details a bit distracting from the main point: finding a date.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY LOVE JESUS LIKE ME?

Free Christian Dating SitesThe three sites we’ve reviewed are all centered around the goal of helping you find a “Christian” date. There are specific filters that you can employ to find profiles that align with your spiritual convictions. You are able to choose denominations, level of involvement in the local church, and even how much they use their Spiritual gifts. (You know, like, if they have too much mercy and can’t stop feeding and clothing the poor, then you’ll know this information about them. Again, we can’t make this stuff up.)

When it comes to Christian filters, we recommend all three.

WHAT IF I’M WORRIED ABOUT WEIRDOS?

For starters, you could always choose to forgo the profile picture. This is not a good idea if you’re a member of a paying site, but we offer that it’s even less of a good idea if you’re on a free site. On both kinds of sites, anyone can create a free profile. But many of those free profiles get abandoned on free sites because no one is financially tied to them, so there’s no need to keep up with it. Usually, most people who are on a free site believe that if there’s no photo, then the profile is no longer in use, and they don’t pay much attention to it. So our recommendation to you is that if you are really going to get involved on a free Christian dating site, use a picture so that people know you mean business. Choose a picture that reveals the true you, and if someone expresses interest, then you can always post more later when you’re more comfortable.

On all of the sites you create a user name instead of using your real name, so you are not at risk for divulging too much personal information to strangers across the internet. And, should you have a weirdo problem, all three of the sites we reviewed offer you either the option to block or delete users.

With that, we recommend all three as being sufficient in the area of privacy and security.

WHO’S IN CONTROL HERE?

Dear Control Freaks,
There’s no need to worry. You have total control if you pick any one of these three sites. No computer will be all up in your business telling you who you should talk to. It’s all up to you, friend. Godspeed.

Love,
The SingleRoots Team

Recommendation: all three sites

WHAT IF I NEED THIS “TO GO”?

We think the Rolling Stones said it best, “You can’t always get what you want.” With free Christian dating sites comes a price: advertisements and no mobile options. You’ll have to actually use the internet browser on your phone to log in and check on your honey(s).

Recommendation: none

While this certainly isn’t for everyone, and I feel a little embarassed admitting it, I’ve actually had some decent success on OkCupid. As the most widely-used free dating site, there really is a large pool of men to choose from. You can filter matches by men who self-identify as Christian (which, as always involves some discernment on your part, too). If you’re willing to screen your own messages (I got a lot of messages from guys I was not interested in dating, but a few from guys I was), it’s worth a shot!

I, too, have had some luck on OKCupid. Met my first boyfriend on there, actually, and he was a very high quality match (it didn’t work out between us, obviously, but he was still a good match.) My cousin, who is not a Christian, met her husband on there and they are perfect for each other.

I like the fact that not only can you see that someone self-identifies as a Christian, but also if they are “not too serious about it,” “somewhat serious about it,” or “very serious about it.” I weed out anyone who isn’t very serious about his Christianity. The questions they use to determine match % are also very telling, because you can see each others’ answers, and there is also an option to explain the chosen answer.

Just as a caution, if you are very easily offended, OKC might not be a good choice. The questions in particular can get pretty sexually explicit, though you don’t have to answer them if you don’t want to.

In the area of the free Christian sites, I’ve used Christian Dating for Free, and it’s actually pretty decent. My biggest complaint is that there are a lot of inactive profiles on there, and the site doesn’t let you know how long it’s been since a user logged on (it tells you if they are currently online, or were online “today” or “yesterday” but that’s it.) The administrators are really good about banning scammers if you report them, and unfortunately there are quite a few scammers on that site. You just have to use common sense and be smart about who you talk to. The forums used to be really good, but I’m not sure how they are now.
