I'm determined to remember what I learned last time.

George Santayana once wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

It has only been two years since I found myself in the exact same place I have landed in now. I remember it well. So why am I going through this again?

Two years ago, I had just started summer vacation and my mom was taking me on a long-awaited trip to California so I could see where she grew up. I had packed my suitcase and driven to my parents’ house since we were leaving early the next morning. As I was spending a relaxing evening there, I heard my mom ask, “What is that…?”

My dad and I both turned to look at her. She looked back at us and said, “There’s a lump.” [Read more...]

I'd been telling God how great my finger paintings were...

Children’s artwork sucks. Whether finger paints, crayons or macaroni crafts, they’re just no good.

I’ve been given a few from little relatives and my first reaction has never been, “Better hide this away for Antiques Road Show in a few years.” But I’ve kept them anyway.

And the parents of those children value the art, too, because it’s the expression of a child’s heart.

In fact, I’d be shocked if I heard someone say, “This is crap, Billy. Everyone knows that horses aren’t blue.” [Read more...]

Where others have told me to dream big, Storyline taught me to DO big.

Until I get that long awaited Heaven-sent confirmation that my future wife is Carrie Underwood’s newly-cloned twin sister, she has never provided any reason for me to give her much thought. However, as I sat in the airport diner waiting to leave Nashville, her song “Jesus Take the Wheel” came on and I smiled a bit as I thought about it. No, this isn’t one of those types of blog posts.

There are times in life that the valleys we experience provide us with no other choice but to leave it in His hands, but after attending the Storyline Conference with Donald Miller, I have to wonder if that cliché has been tremendously abused. [Read more...]

Is this God's plan for me, or did I make it up for myself?

I had a friend who was deeply in love with her boyfriend. In fact, they were engaged to be married. They’d been together since high school and were inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone that a wedding was in the future. Then, things changed.

He wasn’t sure he was in love anymore. He needed some time to think about things. There was too much pressure. He left her house that night, saying goodbye as he walked past the unopened box of wedding invitations. He was confused and she was devastated.

The good news? His feelings lied to him and he knew the truth. They reconciled and are now married. There’s a lesson in this story. Sometimes we have to separate from the things we love in order to make sure what we want is really what we want.  [Read more...]

Do you struggle with your daily devotional time?

For anyone outside of the Church community who’s not fluent in “Christianese,” the word devotion has a pretty simple meaning: dedication, consecration, and love. But to Christians, the word has mysteriously been translated to mean that special time you put aside each day to read your Bible and pray. And sadly, the two definitions don’t always mesh.

Growing up in a Bible-reading, church-attending family, I learned the latter definition of devotion early on. Every morning before school, my dad would faithfully gather his reluctant kids in the living room, where we’d take turns reading that day’s passage in a daily Bible. The New Testament portions weren’t bad, but I mostly remember the Old Testament passages. I can still feel that 7:00 a.m. grogginess as I read aloud about how Seth begat Enos, and Enos begat Cainan, and Cainan begat Mahalaleel, and Mahalaleel begat… well, you catch my drift. (You can imagine the giggle fest between my siblings as we each tried to pronounce old school names like Mahalaleel.) [Read more...]
