Online dating does not guarantee marriage for everyone. Duh. In fact, far less people marry than don’t. Again, duh. If you’ve been single long enough, though, it’s easy to become cynical and jaded about marriage and about dating in general. It’s good to be reminded occasionally that online dating does work for some people. And for those who are risk-averse, it’s good to be reminded that there’s no harm in giving it a try.
The following are interviews with people we know personally—people who met online and got married. The cool thing about these interviews is each of the couples share stories of approaches that worked (as well as things that didn’t), how they overcame their own cynicism, and what they liked best about the site they were successful with.
Even if today is not the day you sign up for online dating, it’s good info to read and file away in case there’s another Friday night that you decide you’re ready to give it a try (or try it again):
We Don’t Shout It from the Rooftops, but We Met Online and Got Married :: “I was off and on (mostly off) eharmony for about 5 years. It was late one evening and I saw the commercial for a free personality, compatibility test. I was bored and decided to see what kind of woman that eharmony would say is my match.”
Online Dating Doesn’t Work? Well, We Met Online and Got Married :: “If there is a word for “vehemently opposed to the idea of ever pursuing a relationship online,” then that was me. The men I met were great, helpful and kind, and one made me fall head over heels in love, so I am truly pleased with this experience.”
We Met on Christian Mingle and Are Getting Married :: “If I met someone out dancing or something, I would probably spend the same amount in drinks. And this way, I’m able to be much more specific in what or who I’m looking for. It’s very much worth it, if you’re willing to take the time and really try. If you do, quality people, like Arica, are out there, which is worth way more than what you pay for the site fees. You can’t put a price tag on what she means to me.”
