We’ve been honest from the start about how we’ve used online dating on and off for years. We don’t have a problem with it. Like most of our friends, we have a love/hate relationship with online dating–we’re hopeful that it works for us one day, but if it does, we hate that it would become a part of our love story. We’d much rather tell people how we met our significant other while reaching for apples in the produce department of the grocery store or bumping into each other at the coffee bar before church or something far more exciting or entertaining.
Still, there are some Christians who waffle on the idea of whether or not they should be using online dating sites at all. So since we’ve admitted our personal freedom to use it, we thought it would be helpful to hear the thoughts of other Christian leaders on the matter–to see if they advise against it or not. It’s an interesting discussion, even if you already have your mind made up on one side or the other.
Is Online Dating Good for Christians? via Desiring God and John Piper :: “I am fine with meeting someone online and learning as much as possible about them. I have met numerous couples recently who said they met online and they are happily married. They are both mature Christians. I have got zero problem with that. The great question is: Are you mature enough to discern a worthy spouse?”
Should Christians Use Online Dating? via The Porch, the Young Adult Ministry of Watermark Church in Dallas :: “You have to be really good at getting to know the real person. That’s tricky because if they don’t want to show you who they really are, they might be excellent at keeping it from you. I have two simple rules that will help a lot if you choose to date online…”
Is Online Dating for Christians? via Christianity Today :: An anthropologist, a writer, and a ministry leader consider online dating sites. Even though it was written in 2011, it’s still valid.
Is Online Dating Biblical? via Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family :: “The arguments on both sides have merit. Like many things, online dating isn’t inherently evil or good. Sometimes things are less about what we do than about the heart we do it with. More often than not, the Bible offers general principles over specifics. We can then take these big ideas and apply them to our everyday lives and the choices we make. But that process requires wisdom, discernment and guidance…”
What Do You Think of eharmony? via Tim Challies :: “While the Bible praises marriage and demands that we hold it in honor, it gives very little guidance on how we get from single to married. The Old Testament provides many and varied examples, but the New Testament describes and prescribes nothing. Nothing in the Bible prohibits the use of a dating service or the use of any kind of media as a means of communication between unmarried men and women. Though the New Testament could have decreed certain patterns of courtship or certain means of communication, the Lord, in his wisdom, chose not to address the subject. This tells us that we have freedom before the Lord to rely on wisdom and discernment in the pursuit of a spouse…”
