2012 in Review :: Our Favorite Music

It wouldn’t be the end of the year if we didn’t take a moment and highlight some of our favorite music that debuted in 2012. Since we work behind a computer all day, we’re always looking for new music to provide a soundtrack for our days.

Last year we shared our favorite albums, but this year we decided to share a playlist of our favorite songs from our favorite albums of 2012. Eighteen songs from all over the music spectrum. Let’s just say if you’re a one-genre kind of person, you might not appreciate the goodness of this playlist. [Read more...]

SingleRoots Summer Reading List 2012

Looking for a summer read? Check out these suggestions!

We can’t really have a collection of summer playlists without a collection of books to suggest, now can we? Some of us long for things to calm down a bit in the summer so we can find time to devour a really good book.

We polled a few of our SingleRoots contributors to see what books they think you should seriously consider reading this summer. We didn’t give them any guidelines, so some of their suggestions are old, new, Christian, non-Christian, fiction, non-fiction–a veritable hodgepodge of their favorites. If you’re looking for something new to read, this list should be able to help you out!

Behold, our SingleRoots Summer Reading List 2012:

SingleRoots Summer Playlists 2012

Summertime and the living is easy. (Or at least that's what "they" say.)

It’s summer, y’all. Those of us living in Texas wonder if we unknowingly took up residence on the Equator–and it’s just the beginning of June.

Regardless of weather conditions, it’s the time of year for slowing down, intentionally gathering with friends, and stopping to exhale from the pressures of life, be it day or night.

Whether you’re on vacation, waiting for vacation, or not even off on the 4th of July, summer deserves a soundtrack. In fact, we think summer deserves not one, but three soundtracks–one for days, one for nights, and one for worship. So we’ve compiled a few songs for you. A little bit of everything—old and new music, mainstream and indie, Christian and secular.

Who among us isn’t always looking for good music? Exactly.

Our Favorite Music of 2011

Music makes the people come together. Or does it make the world go round? We can never remember.

Regardless, it’s been a good year for music. Such a good year, in fact, that we can’t even rank our favorite albums of 2011. We’re just going to put them out there and leave it at that…

NEEDTOBREATHE :: The Reckoning

We’re especially fond of this album because it came out right around the time that we started our launch plan for SingleRoots. It was on constant repeat as we started seeing this site come to fruition. But while we might have an emotional connection to it, the fact of the matter is that this album is a vivid reminder of why we love this Southern Rock band. It was so good that it even helped us get over our grief about them touring with Taylor Swift earlier this year. Besides, we owe Taylor Swift a debt of gratitude for sharing their goodness with the world. But we’ll still prefer seeing them in smaller, more intimate venues sans a bunch of tween girls, thankyouverymuch. [Read more...]

The Music that Sparked the Discussion

If you’re a nosy detail-oriented person like me, you’re probably wondering how we landed on the word resistance for our first month.

It all started over a debate on the greatness of the Josh Garrels’ Love & War & the Sea in Between album. Someone who shall remain nameless (but he just posted yesterday, if you want to judge him) was expressing to me that he just didn’t get what the big deal was about the album. I informed him that he just needed to keep listening to it. Not because it would grow on him (which it would), but because it would soon surpass most of his favorite albums and eventually land in his top ten of all time. Oh, and that I was not being dramatic about this.

Two days later I received the following text:

Which then led to a discussion about, you guessed it, resistance. [Read more...]
